Chapter Twenty-Four

Novak did not understand why Marta directed Milton back to the airport at first. Hope and Ramirez were in the back seat, and she was attempting to tie a makeshift sling around his arm.

“The hospitals would ask too many questions,” said Marta curtly as they sped off.

Novak was not ready to trust this woman who claimed to be her mother.

Yet.

There are too many questions for Marta to answer first, Novak thought.

For now, Novak was grateful she had arrived when she did. Ewa would have killed me without hesitation, she thought.

Hope, herself, was much stronger than she looked. It was part of the DNA re-sequencing she had forcibly undergone. She remembered it took weeks to get noticeable results.

Her sister’s newfound strength, on the other hand, was beyond anything Hope had seen.

And in a matter of days, too.

Novak was lost in thought as they pulled onto the tarmac. She figured Milton would get them directly to their own chartered jet, but she was mistaken.

“I had planned to have Ewa with us on our return,” said Marta, “I’ll explain more once we’re on the plane.”

Novak was amazed by the jet Marta had arrived on. It was a luxury charter that included basic medical facilities.

“This used to belong to the United States government. Technically, it still does. It’s been in the reserve ready fleet. Mr. Greenway arranged it as an extended loaner,” said Marta, “Milton, take Ramirez into the back. The medics should be able to fix him up. I need to have a word with my daughter.”

To say they needed to have ‘a word’ was an understatement, thought Novak.

Though, to Hope’s surprise, Milton complied without a word.

Ramirez did not need to be further persuaded, either. The pain was visible on his face. Hope was still processing how efficiently Ewa tore through Ramirez and herself.

“Since we don’t know where Ewa is going yet, we will wait here,” said Marta, “now, sit and ask your questions.”

And Novak did. The main cabin was generously appointed, with leather armchairs and sofas. Hope also noticed a bar towards the rear of the cabin.

While there were years to fill in, she started with the most recent events. Marta answered every question, sparing no details. The intimate knowledge Marta possessed about Novak’s life surprised her. Marta smiled and said, “Michael keeps detailed files on you and your associates. He was kind enough to share them.”

At this revelation, Hope felt her anger rise and Marta must have noticed.

She smiled ruefully, and said, “The things that were done to you make you all rather unique assets. Yes. Assets. There are organizations around the world that would study you. They want to replicate it,” said Marta, “I’ve read the files on what some of the other intended uses that were proposed.”

“The Soviets tried an approach in the late 1980s that failed. The technology wasn’t advanced enough.”

The things that kept Hope on edge was her mother’s accent. It was only a faint Polish accent. She did not understand.

“How come your English is so good? And how is it that you have inroads with a senior government official?” she asked bluntly.
